From Sunday morning sermons to Wednesday night youth group meetings, church has been a constant presence in my life. At age eight, I went to a Billy Graham crusade and walked the aisle to accept Jesus into my heart. After that, my pastor baptized me in a pond at the church picnic. For any good Baptist, these steps are the key to redemption, salvation, and heaven. Even after seventeen years immersed in church and a Christian school, I was still utterly lost and living in bondage. No one had ever shared with me the essential truths in the Bible about God’s longing heart for an intimate covenant-relationship and the inheritance that flows from it. I did not understand the fear of the Lord and the hidden spiritual war I battled daily. Rejection, bitterness, sin, self-centeredness, rebellion, addiction, bulimia, and suicidal thoughts entangled my soul; I was living in complete defeat and blindness to the devil’s lies and strategies. Why was I so lost, wandering in overwhelming darkness, when the sounds of Christianity surrounded my life?

My soul was in constant torment, but it was that emotional and mental pain that led me to utter these desperate words from my heart, “HELP ME, JESUS!” I screamed these simple, saving words into my pillow over and over again late one night, under the influence of cocaine. It was in this desperate place that God ran to me as the Father ran to His prodigal son. That night, God opened my blind eyes, I repented of my wretched sins, I surrendered my life to Him, and I became a new creation in Christ Jesus.

Luke 7:47 says, “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”

The many sins which I had carried for years were forgiven, and I was filled with a deep love for the One who showed me mercy. My heartfelt love for Him and His Word gave birth to a new story: true redemption, salvation from sin, a victorious walk, and learning to overcome the powers of darkness and deception through the blood of the Lamb and the Sword of the Spirit. My redemption story and freedom through Calvary’s blood has filled me with a passion for women, young and old, and a longing to see God’s Covenant Bride claim her rightful inheritance secured by Jesus’ victory on the cross.
